Az̧ Z̧a‘āyin is in Qatar's Al Daayen municipality, north of Doha, in the area between the capital and the coast. Like much of modern Qatar, it has been planned and built largely in recent decades. The map shows wide main roads, large interchanges and neighbourhoods divided into regular blocks of villas and compounds.
The land is almost completely flat, with no rivers or hills to disrupt the plan. As a result, the street pattern is determined entirely by planning: straight main roads, internal streets set out in neat rows and cul-de-sacs, and open sandy areas left between districts or reserved for future development.
An Az̧ Z̧a‘āyin map poster has a distinctly contemporary geometry. The main roads create a strong frame, the residential blocks fill it in even rows, and the open spaces around the edges show the desert on which it was built.
