Āz̄arshahr is in East Azerbaijan Province in northwestern Iran, southwest of Tabriz. The town sits in the zone where the slopes of the Sahand massif meet the flat land running toward Lake Urmia. The area is known for stone. Quarries around Āz̄arshahr produce travertine, including distinctive reddish varieties, used in building across Iran and abroad.
