From above, Azua is a tight rectangle of streets set on a wide, dry plain in the southwest of the Dominican Republic. The blocks are short and regular. The main road cuts through on a diagonal, and within a few kilometres the dense centre gives way to farmland, scrub and the faint lines of rural tracks heading toward the hills.
Azua de Compostela is one of the oldest European-founded towns in the Americas, established in the first years of the sixteenth century. The town has been rebuilt more than once, and the plan you see today is a later layout rather than the first settlement. Hernán Cortés is often said to have lived here as a young notary before setting out for Mexico.

The highway diagonal
The main regional road crosses the town at an angle to the grid. It is the one strong diagonal on the map and pulls the eye toward the coast and the capital.
Plain and bay
Open land surrounds the town, and the Bay of Ocoa sits to the south. At larger print sizes the coastline adds a soft curve beneath the sharp geometry of the streets.
