Bacheli is in the Dantewada district of southern Chhattisgarh, at the foot of the Bailadila range. These hills hold some of India's richest iron ore deposits, and the town grew up largely as a township for the mines run by the National Mineral Development Corporation. Its layout reflects that origin.

The iron-ore hills rise sharply beside the town. On a wider frame, their steep, sparsely roaded slopes take up much of the map.
