Bad Essen is in the Osnabrück Land of Lower Saxony, where the wooded ridge of the Wiehengebirge drops down to the North German Plain. On the map, the town stretches along the foot of the hills. Its streets climb gently toward the forest, while the Mittelland Canal runs in a long, dead-straight line across the lowland just below.
The town is a recognised spa, with a saline spring, and its small old centre keeps half-timbered houses clustered around the church. Nearby, in the hills above Barkhausen, a quarry face preserves dinosaur footprints, one of the better-known sites of its kind in Germany. The wooded ridge rises to the south of town. Few roads cross it, so the hills appear as a quiet, open band above the streets.
