Bagaha sits in the far north of Bihar, in West Champaran district, where the Gangetic plain starts to rise toward the Himalayan foothills. On a map, the town is a compact knot of lanes and roads. Around it lies a flat patchwork of fields, with village clusters spread across it at fairly even intervals.
The strongest line in the area is the Gandak River. It runs as a broad, shifting channel with sandbars and side streams, and its banks change from one season to the next.
