Bangor sits on the north coast of County Down, facing Belfast Lough. The coastline shapes its map. The town centre curves around a sheltered bay with one of the largest marinas in Ireland, while coastal paths and smaller inlets stretch east and west along the shore.
The town has an old monastic history. Bangor Abbey was founded by Saint Comgall in the sixth century and became one of the most important centres of learning in early medieval Europe. More recently, Bangor was granted city status in 2022. Inland, residential streets climb gently away from the water in curving rows and loops.
