Banyoles is in the province of Girona, and its map is dominated by the Estany de Banyoles, the largest natural lake in Catalonia. The lake is long and narrow, lying north to south, with an irregular shoreline edged by reeds, small inlets and a waterside promenade. The town sits along its eastern side.
Water continues into the town itself. A network of old channels, known locally as recs, runs from the lake through the historic centre. They were built in the Middle Ages to power mills and irrigate gardens. They show up on the map as thin lines threaded between streets, meeting the tight medieval core around the arcaded main square.
The lake has an international profile as well: it hosted the rowing events of the 1992 Barcelona Olympics and remains a major venue for the sport.
