Barjala is a census town in the western part of Tripura, in India's northeast, a short distance south of the state capital Agartala. The Bangladesh border is never far away in this part of the state. On a map the town is an informal network of lanes, not a planned grid, and it follows older paths between homesteads and fields.
The land around it is low and wet. Scattered ponds and tanks show up as small, sharply defined shapes among the streets. Paddy fields fill the gaps between settlements, and the roads run along slightly higher ground. The result is a patchwork in which built-up areas and water sit side by side at a fine scale.
