Barwala lies in Botad district of Gujarat, on the eastern side of the Saurashtra peninsula, where the land is flat and open and the horizon stretches out in every direction. The town has a dense old centre of narrow streets and closely built houses. Newer neighbourhoods have grown around it along the main roads leading to nearby towns and villages.
Agriculture shapes the landscape here, with cotton and other crops grown across the surrounding plain. Beyond the town, the map is a patchwork of fields, tracks and small settlements, and seasonal streams and ponds add scattered shapes of water. Main roads leave the town in several directions, connecting it with Botad and the villages of the district. They cut straight lines across the open land.
