Baturaja is the main town of Ogan Komering Ulu Regency in South Sumatra, set in the interior of the province on the Ogan River. The river loops through the area in wide bends, and the town has grown along and between them. Its outline follows the water rather than a plan, with neighbourhoods spread along both banks and joined by bridges.
The railway linking Palembang with Lampung passes through the town. Baturaja is also known for its cement industry, which uses limestone from the surrounding hills. Around the town, the landscape mixes plantations, patches of forest and villages, and the ground rises gradually toward the Barisan Mountains to the west.
