Bayan is the seat of Bayan County, which falls under Harbin in Heilongjiang province. It sits on the broad, flat farmland north of the Songhua River. On the map the town follows the pattern of many towns in northeastern China: wide, straight streets in a near-regular grid, with long rectangular blocks between them.
Around the edges, the grid gives way to fields laid out in long parallel strips. Field roads and shelter belts continue the lines of the town's streets far out into the countryside. Small streams and drainage channels cross the plain, and villages sit at regular intervals along the rural roads.
