Baytokay lies in the Ili region of northwestern Xinjiang, east of the city of Yining. This part of the Ili valley is one of the greener corners of the region, fed by rivers descending from the Tian Shan. From above, the town appears as a modest cluster of streets surrounded by irrigated fields and tree-lined roads.
Because the valley is relatively well watered, the landscape around Baytokay is dominated by farmland laid out in long strips and blocks. Irrigation channels and field boundaries add a fine, repeating pattern, while the mountains rise in the distance to the south and north.
