Beja crowns a low hill in the Alentejo region of southern Portugal, and the map makes that elevation visible in the way streets curve and tighten toward the top. The old town is a compact oval of narrow lanes, and beyond it the city thins quickly into ring roads, newer housing and then long, straight farm tracks crossing the plain.
The town was the Roman settlement of Pax Julia, and its castle keep is one of the tallest in the country. Beja is also known for the Convent of Nossa Senhora da Conceição, linked to the Letters of a Portuguese Nun attributed to Mariana Alcoforado. These layers of history sit within a street plan that still follows its medieval outline.
