Bellevue lies just south of Omaha, on high ground above the Missouri River, which forms both the city's eastern edge and the state border with Iowa. It is often described as the oldest continuous town in Nebraska, with roots in a fur-trading post of the early nineteenth century. The oldest streets are close to the river bluffs.
To the south is Offutt Air Force Base, home of US Strategic Command. On the map it appears as a large, clearly defined area with its runway and base roads. The rest of Bellevue is mainly residential, with neighbourhoods reaching west across rolling land and north toward Omaha.
