Benxi lies in the hills of eastern Liaoning, and its shape comes almost entirely from the terrain. The city follows the valley of the Taizi River, which bends through it from east to west, so the urban area is long and narrow, squeezed between wooded slopes that rise close to the streets.
Benxi grew around coal and iron, and steelmaking still defines much of its economy. Industrial sites and rail lines sit along the valley floor next to residential districts. Outside the city are the Benxi Water Caves, a long underground river that visitors explore by boat.
