Berkeley sits on the east shore of San Francisco Bay, and its map changes character from west to east. Near the water, the flatlands are laid out in a regular grid, crossed by long avenues. Moving east, the streets begin to curve and then wind steeply up into the Berkeley Hills, where roads loop around ridges and canyons.
At the centre lies the University of California, Berkeley, whose campus appears as a large, irregular area of paths and buildings, with Sather Tower near its middle. Telegraph Avenue runs south from the campus, and Strawberry Creek winds through the grounds. On the western edge, the Berkeley Marina extends into the bay.
