Berkhamsted is a market town in Hertfordshire, set in the narrow valley of the River Bulbourne in the Chiltern Hills. From above it is long and linear. The High Street runs along the valley floor, the Grand Union Canal and the West Coast Main Line run parallel to it, and residential streets climb the slopes on either side.
Next to the railway station are the earthworks of Berkhamsted Castle, a motte-and-bailey castle where William the Conqueror is said to have received the submission of English leaders in 1066. The novelist Graham Greene was born in the town, and his father was headmaster of Berkhamsted School.
