Bijāwar lies in Chhatarpur district in northern Madhya Pradesh, in the region known as Bundelkhand. From above, the town is a compact settlement with a dense centre of narrow streets, a few main roads leading outward, and fields and scrubland extending in every direction. Water bodies and seasonal streams appear as scattered shapes in the surrounding landscape.
The town was once the seat of Bijawar State, a princely state of the Bundelkhand Agency until Indian independence. Its name is also familiar to geologists, as the Bijawar Group of ancient rock formations is named after the area, a reminder of how old the ground beneath these streets is.
