Bikram is a town in Patna district, Bihar, on the broad flat plain south of the Ganges. On a map it forms a modest cluster of streets where local roads meet. The houses gather around the market area, and lanes run outward into the farmland that covers almost all the surrounding land.
The landscape here is one of the most intensively cultivated in India. Fields are divided into small plots, villages sit close together, and ponds and water tanks dot the land. Roads run from Bikram toward Patna and neighbouring towns, and these routes stand out clearly on a line drawing.
