Birnin Kebbi is the capital of Kebbi State in northwestern Nigeria. It sits close to the Sokoto River, whose broad floodplain runs past the town and fills with water in the rainy season. The name comes from the Hausa word birni, used for a walled or fortified town. The older quarter still has the denser, irregular street pattern of a historic settlement centred on the emir's palace.
