Blackheath's map is dominated by empty space. The heath itself, a broad stretch of open grassland, sits at the centre, crossed diagonally by roads that follow ancient routes out of London toward Kent. Around its edges, streets of Georgian and Victorian houses form a dense frame, and the village gathers in a small hollow to the south.
The heath has a long public history. Rebels gathered here during the Peasants' Revolt of 1381, and again under Jack Cade in 1450. In more recent decades, it has become known as the starting point of the London Marathon. Greenwich Park adjoins it to the north, with its avenues leading down toward the river.
