Boaco, capital of the department of the same name in central Nicaragua, is known as the ciudad de dos pisos, the two-storey city. The town is built on a hillside, with an upper and a lower part connected by steep streets, and on a map this appears as two distinct clusters of blocks linked by roads climbing the slope.
The street layout follows the traditional Spanish grid where the terrain allows, but bends and breaks where the hill becomes too steep. Around the town, the land opens into rolling pastures, with scattered farms and roads running out toward neighbouring towns.
