Bologna's historic centre is one of the largest and best preserved in Europe, and on a map it shows up as a compact, roughly hexagonal mass of streets. Its outline follows the old city walls, now replaced by a ring of wide boulevards. Inside, the main roads fan out from the area around Piazza Maggiore toward the old gates like spokes.
Beneath the streets run old canals that once powered mills and workshops. They are mostly covered today, though one can still be glimpsed through a small window on Via Piella. To the south, the city meets the first hills of the Apennines, and a long portico climbs to the Sanctuary of San Luca.
Bologna's porticoes, which stretch for dozens of kilometres, are on the UNESCO World Heritage list, and its university, founded in 1088, is often called the oldest in the Western world.
