Brentwood is a hamlet in the Town of Islip, in Suffolk County on Long Island, New York. Its map is a broad suburban layout: long residential streets, many in near-grid patterns, crossed by main roads and the Long Island Rail Road. Parks, schools and wooded tracts break the rhythm of the housing.
Brentwood has an unusual origin. In 1851 it began as Modern Times, a utopian community founded by the reformer Josiah Warren, before taking its current name some years later. In the twentieth century the area became home to the Pilgrim State Hospital, whose large grounds still take up a significant part of the map.
