Bressanone, or Brixen in German, lies in South Tyrol at the confluence of the Eisack (Isarco) and Rienz rivers. On a map, the two waterways converge just north of the historic centre, and the old town sits as a tight, walled-looking cluster of streets and squares beside them.
The town was the seat of prince-bishops for centuries, and the cathedral square, the Hofburg palace and the arcaded lanes around them give the centre its dense structure. Outside this core, newer quarters spread along the valley floor, while vineyards and orchards climb the slopes toward the Plose, the mountain rising to the east.
