Brody lies in the northeast of Lviv Oblast, in the flat country of the former Galicia. For much of the nineteenth century it was a free trade city near the border between the Austrian and Russian empires, and it was an important centre of Jewish life and commerce. The map still shows a compact historic core around its central square.
Traces of the town's past remain in its layout. Brody Castle's star-shaped earthworks survive on the edge of the old centre and are clearly visible from above. The writer Joseph Roth was born here in 1894, and the town appears, lightly disguised, in his fiction. A railway passes through the town on its way across the plain.
