Budapest is two cities on one map. On the west bank of the Danube, Buda climbs over hills and wooded slopes, with Castle Hill and Gellért Hill close to the river. On the east bank, Pest spreads across a flat plain in a pattern of concentric boulevards and radial avenues. Buda, Pest and Óbuda were united in 1873.
The Danube runs through the middle from north to south. It is crossed by a series of bridges, among them the Széchenyi Chain Bridge, the first permanent bridge between the banks. Margaret Island, a long stretch of parkland, lies in the river to the north, and the Parliament building stands on the Pest embankment facing the Buda hills.

Pest boulevards
The Small and Grand Boulevards form two concentric arcs, and radial avenues such as Andrássy run outward from them. Together they give Pest a clear, readable structure.
Margaret Island
This long, narrow island in the Danube between Buda and Pest is almost entirely parkland. Bridges connect it to both banks at each end.
