Bushehr occupies a long, narrow peninsula reaching into the Persian Gulf, with water on almost every side. On a map the city is a thin band of land, and its oldest part sits at the northern end: a close cluster of lanes and courtyard houses. Newer districts extend southward along the peninsula, and wetlands and shallow water separate it from the mainland.
The historic quarter is known for houses built of coral stone and fitted with wooden balconies and windcatchers, a style shaped by the Gulf's heat and humidity. Bushehr has long been an important port for southern Iran. To the south of the city stands the Bushehr nuclear power plant, the first in the country.
