Buta lies in the north of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and serves as the administrative centre of Bas-Uele province. The Rubi River passes by the town, and on a map its winding course sets the direction for much of the settlement, with roads following the higher, drier ground beside it.
From above, the pattern is modest and clear. A central grid laid out during the colonial period gives way to looser neighbourhoods, and then to tracks that fade into the surrounding forest.
