Buurhakaba lies in the Bay region of southern Somalia, on the main road between Mogadishu and Baidoa. Its name refers to the hills nearby. The town stands close to a group of rocky granite outcrops that rise abruptly from the surrounding plain and are visible from a long way off.
From above, the settlement is a compact cluster of streets and compounds gathered along the highway. Beyond it the land opens into farmland and scrub, crossed by tracks leading to outlying villages. The Bay region is one of Somalia's main farming areas, and cultivated plots mark the ground around the town.
