Cafunfo lies in northeastern Angola, close to the Cuango River, in one of the country's main diamond-producing areas. From above the town is a loose, spread-out settlement with irregular streets and compounds, and the river valley runs nearby. Tracks and roads lead out toward mining areas and neighbouring communities across the surrounding savanna and woodland.
Diamond mining along the Cuango has shaped the town's growth, drawing workers and traders to the area over many decades. The settlement has expanded in an organic way, so its layout follows local paths and the lie of the land more than a formal plan.
