Campinápolis lies in the eastern part of Mato Grosso, in the high cerrado of central Brazil. From above, the town is a compact block of streets surrounded by a vast rural territory, where farmland, remaining savanna and long unpaved roads stretch toward the horizon. The scale of the landscape makes the town look small and precise, almost like a mark on a survey sheet.
The municipality is relatively young, part of the wave of settlement that opened this region to agriculture in the later twentieth century, and its street plan reflects that recent, practical growth. Large parts of the surrounding territory belong to Xavante indigenous lands, which gives Campinápolis a significant indigenous population and a character different from many neighbouring towns.
