Canindé lies in the dry interior of Ceará, in the sertão of northeastern Brazil. From above, its compact centre is gathered around the sanctuary of São Francisco das Chagas. Streets run outward from it across rolling, sparsely vegetated land, and small reservoirs and seasonal streams appear in the surrounding countryside.
The town is known above all as one of Brazil's major Franciscan pilgrimage centres. Every year large numbers of pilgrims arrive, especially around the feast of Saint Francis in early October. The basilica and its surrounding squares form the heart of the town, and much of the street life is shaped by the flow of visitors.
