Cao Bằng is the capital of Cao Bằng Province in the far north of Vietnam, near the Chinese border. From above, the old centre sits on a narrow tongue of land where the Bằng Giang and Hiến rivers meet. Bridges connect it to the neighbourhoods on the opposite banks.
The surrounding province is known for dramatic karst scenery. Bản Giốc Waterfall lies on the border to the northeast, and the Pác Bó cave is where Hồ Chí Minh lived after returning to Vietnam in 1941. Many visitors stop in the town on the way to these places.
