Carauari sits on the banks of the Juruá, one of the Amazon's major tributaries and one of the most winding rivers in the world. On the map the town is a small, tight grid on the higher bank, while the river loops back on itself in tight bends and oxbow lakes around it. Forest covers almost everything else.
The town is reached mainly by river and air, and there is no road connecting it to other Brazilian cities. That isolation shows clearly in the map: roads end at the edge of town, and the river is the only line leading anywhere. The area is also known for community-managed conservation reserves along the Juruá.
