Cenon sits on the right bank of the Garonne, directly across from central Bordeaux. Its land rises in two steps: a lower strip near the river plain, and above it the wooded hillsides known as the coteaux. On a map the slope is easy to read, with streets bending around the terrain and parks covering the steeper ground.
The town grew quickly in the twentieth century, with large housing estates on the plateau. Tram line A now connects it to Bordeaux, climbing through Cenon toward the eastern suburbs. Parc Palmer, a large park on the heights, looks back across the river to the city.
