Chagni lies in northwestern Ethiopia, in the Amhara highlands, on the main road running west towards the lowlands. On the map, the town is shaped by that road. Its main commercial street runs straight through the centre, and a looser network of residential lanes and compounds spreads out on either side.
Like many market towns in the region, Chagni serves the surrounding farming communities. The shape of the town reflects how it grew: from the main road outward, not from a single plan. Around the edges, streets become tracks, and the town gives way to fields, scattered homesteads and open ground.
