Changdian lies in the far northwest of Jiangsu province, in the Xuzhou area, on the broad, flat North China Plain. From above, the town is a compact grid of streets surrounded by farmland that stretches in every direction. The fields are divided into long rectangular strips, separated by straight roads and irrigation ditches.
Villages appear across the plain at regular intervals, each a small dense block of houses among the fields. Roads link them in a network that is almost entirely made of straight lines, reflecting both the flat ground and the planned layout of the farmland. The town's main streets extend outward along these routes.
