Chapayevsk lies south of Samara, on the Chapayevka River, a tributary of the Volga. On the map the river winds past the town in loose bends, while the streets form a fairly regular grid of Soviet-era blocks and older low-rise quarters. Railway lines and large industrial sites fill the edges, and beyond them the land opens into steppe and farmland.
The town grew in the early twentieth century around an explosives and chemical works, and industry shaped its layout. It was renamed several times before being named in 1929 after Vasily Chapayev, the Red Army commander of the Civil War, who became a legendary figure in Soviet culture.
