Chavara lies in Kollam district, on the Kerala coast north of Kollam city. Its shape is set by water on both sides: the straight edge of the Arabian Sea to the west and the inland backwaters and canals to the east. Between them, a long, narrow band of land carries the main highway and the settlements that grew along it.
The coastline here is known for its mineral-rich black sands, and public-sector companies mining and processing those sands are among the area's best-known employers. On the map, the coast looks unusually straight and open, while houses, coconut groves and small lanes fill the land behind it.
