Chengalam is in Kottayam district, in central Kerala, in the rolling midland country between the backwater lowlands and the Western Ghats. The landscape here is a patchwork of rubber plantations, homesteads and small streams, and settlement spreads evenly across it instead of concentrating in a compact town.
The map shows roads that follow the hills. Main routes curve along ridgelines and valley floors, and smaller lanes loop off them to reach houses set among trees. Little on the ground is straight. The result is a relaxed, flowing network, with denser clusters where roads meet and plenty of green space between them.
