Chenghua forms the urban centre of Chenghai District, in the northern part of Shantou in eastern Guangdong. The land here is the low, flat delta of the Han River. From above, the town is threaded with branching waterways. Some are broad river channels, and others are narrow canals that follow old field edges and run between built-up blocks.
Chenghai is widely known in China as a centre of toy manufacturing, and the town's pattern reflects that. Compact residential streets and older lanes sit near the centre, with larger workshop and factory plots across the surrounding districts. The town belongs to the Chaoshan region, whose own language, cuisine and tea culture give this corner of Guangdong a distinct identity.
