Chetumal is the capital of Quintana Roo, in the far south of Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula. It sits at the mouth of the Río Hondo, which forms the border with Belize, on the shore of Chetumal Bay. The city was founded in 1898 under the name Payo Obispo, in part to establish Mexico's presence on this border.
On a map, the bay defines the city's southern edge. A long seafront boulevard runs along the water, and a regular street grid extends inland from it. The Museo de la Cultura Maya, located in the city, presents the history of the Maya region. The river along the west side marks the international border.
