Chichibu occupies a basin in western Saitama, enclosed by mountains on almost every side. The Arakawa River runs through it in a deep, winding course, and the town is built on the flat terraces above the river. From above, the street network fills the basin floor and stops sharply where the forested slopes begin, so the outline of the town follows the terrain closely.
The town centre grew around Chichibu Shrine, and every December the Chichibu Night Festival brings illuminated floats through its streets; it is included in UNESCO's listing of Japan's Yama, Hoko and Yatai float festivals. Mount Buko, marked by limestone quarrying, stands over the town to the south, and rail lines connect the basin to Tokyo.

Streets around Chichibu Shrine form the oldest and densest part of town, the route of the famous December night festival floats.
