Seen from above, Chidambaram arranges itself around a single centre. The Thillai Nataraja Temple occupies a large rectangular enclosure, and the main streets run parallel to its walls in nested squares, the way many old Tamil temple towns were laid out. Beyond that core the grid loosens into lanes, tanks and newer residential blocks that spread across the flat delta land.
The town sits on the low coastal plain of Tamil Nadu, a short distance inland from the Bay of Bengal, with the Kollidam and Vellar rivers reaching the sea to the north and south. The Nataraja temple is known across India for its image of Shiva as the cosmic dancer and for its gold-roofed inner hall, and it gives the whole street plan its orientation.
