Chinahsen, also written Chinaksen, is a town in the Somali Region of eastern Ethiopia, in the upland country between Harar and Jijiga. On a map it appears as a modest cluster of streets. Around it lies a broad, lightly marked landscape of grazing land, fields and seasonal watercourses, typical of this part of the Horn of Africa.
The layout is informal and open. A few longer roads carry traffic in and out of town. Between them, the residential areas form an irregular patchwork of short streets and compounds rather than a planned grid. The contrast between these tight pockets and the spacious land around them gives the drawing its balance.
Towns in this region often serve as meeting points for pastoral communities and for trade between the highlands and the eastern lowlands, and their maps show roads reaching out in several directions.
