Chingola lies in Zambia's Copperbelt Province, close to the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The town was built to serve copper mining, and its map shows this clearly. Residential areas with regular streets and neat blocks sit beside the Nchanga mining area, where open pits and industrial land cover a large part of the surrounding landscape.
The Nchanga open pit is one of the largest open-pit copper mines in the world, and it has shaped the town's economy for decades.
