Chiniot lies on the left bank of the Chenab River in Pakistani Punjab. Low rocky hills rise near the river, unusual in the flat plain, and the town is squeezed between them and the water. On the map, the old city is a dense tangle of lanes around bazaars. Newer districts spread out along the roads to Faisalabad and Sargodha.
The town is famous for its carved wooden furniture and fine woodwork, traditions practised in workshops across the old quarters. Its best-known building is the Omar Hayat Mahal, a tall haveli decorated with elaborate wooden balconies. The Shahi Mosque, built in the Mughal era by Saadullah Khan, a minister of Shah Jahan, is another landmark.
