Chios is the main town of the island of the same name in the northeastern Aegean. It sits on the east coast, facing Turkey's Çeşme peninsula across a narrow strait. On a map the harbour is its centre of gravity: a rounded basin enclosed by breakwaters, with the waterfront curving around it and streets rising behind toward the hills.
At the northern end of the harbour stands the Kastro, a fortified medieval quarter whose walls enclose a small maze of lanes that shows clearly in the street pattern. South of the town lies Kampos, an area of stone-walled estates and citrus orchards. Its long walled lanes form a rectilinear pattern quite unlike the dense town centre.

The Kastro
Inside its fortifications, the walled medieval quarter north of the harbour keeps a tight, irregular network of lanes. It stands out at once as a small historic enclave.
